Phase 3b - The Military establishment 'inherited' by James II

 

The First Foot Guards

This regiment originated from the troops who accompanied Charles II on his return from Holland



Facings - Stuart blue    Stockings - blue


The Second Foot Guards (Coldstream)

This was the former Lord General's Regiment of Foot Guards (Monck's regiment) - after Monck's death, the title changed, and with it the facing colour

At some point after the coronation of James II, the trouser and stocking colour changed to blue

Earl of Dunbarton's Regiment (later, The First, or Royal Regiment of Foot)

This was a regiment recalled from foreign service to garrison Tangier

The Queen Dowager's (Kirke's)Regiment  (formerly the 'Old' Tangier Regiment) - (later the Second Regiment of Foot)

This regiment was formed from the Protectorate infantry 'inherited' by Charles, and raised for service in Portugal and subsequently in Tangier

The Holland (Prince George of Denmark's) Regiment (later the Third Regiment of Foot)

This regiment was formed as the Holland Regiment in 1665 from English volunteers, (in Dutch service since 1572), who refused the oath of allegiance to the Dutch Stadholder when war was declared between Britain and Holland in 1665

The Queen Consort's Regiment (formerly the 'New' Tangier Regiment) - (later the Second Regiment of Foot)

This regiment was formed from the Protectorate infantry 'inherited' by Charles, and raised for service to increase the garrison in Tangier

The Lord Admiral's Regiment

The 'senior' maritime regiment, later to become The Royal Marines

This regiment was on the Admiralty establishment

This regiment initially (in 1685) was part of Prince George of Denmark's Regiment

This regiment converted to flintlock muskets relatively early since they were a 'marine' regiment, and they never were issued with pikes
